The Pen Shop - Customer Case Study

Warehouse and Warehouse Management System Implementation Review

Warehouse and Warehouse Management System Implementation Review

The Pen Shop is Europe’s largest writing instrument specialist and one of only two pen shop chains in the world. The company started in 1858 when the first T & G Allan store was set up in Newcastle by local brothers Thomas and George Allan. The Pen Shop has 19 branches nationwide, including stand-alone shops and concessions in the department stores Debenhams and House of Fraser. In addition to retail outlets, The Pen Shop services the business community through its corporate division and the e-commerce division looks after telephone and internet orders.

The Pen Shop stocks a wide range of luxury and premium pen brands, including Mont Blanc, Caran d’Ache, Graf von Faber Castell, Cross, Lamy, Sheaffer, Parker and Waterman, together with an extensive range of gifts and leather accessories. The Pen Shop launched their own brand, Kingsley, over 20 years ago, initially as a leather accessory range but it now includes an extensive writing instrument collection.

The Pen Shop are committed to a significant growth of their e-commerce business and see that as the future of their business, as such, there is a focus on optimising the fulfilment processes at an early stage with this growth in mind.

The Pen Shop management team engaged the specialist Logistics, Supply Chain and Warehouse consultants at Gideon Hillman Consulting to provide a proposal to review the current operation and advise on future opportunities to optimise the flows within their facility, including the design and configuration of the storage facility, and a headline review of The Pen Shop’s planned WMS installation.

Gideon Hillman Consulting conducted an operational review, in order to establish a future strategy and provide a recommended action plan. Gideon Hillman Consulting reviewed the following processes, including but not limited to: product flows and volumes, pick/pack and despatch procedures, inventory management, and plans for future growth projection.

This evaluation of processes enabled the Consultants to benchmark The Pen Shop’s existing operation, highlighting key findings and recommendations for improvement.

The Specialist Logistics, Supply Chain and Warehousing Consultants provided The Pen Shop management team with recommendations, to facilitate The Pen Shop to successfully improve warehouse operation efficiency, whilst also implementing a suitable WMS, simultaneously advising The Pen Shop management team of Improvements to be prioritised by ease of implementation and business benefit.
