British Gypsum - Customer Case Study

British Gypsum engages the Warehouse Specialists at GH Consulting

logistics and distribution network

British Gypsum, part of the Saint-Gobain group, is the UK’s leading manufacturer of interior lining systems.

Their mission is to develop innovative products and services that help customers build better spaces to live, work and play. In every kind of building – from home to work, from the local supermarket to the local hospital – British Gypsum help to create partitions, provide comfort, protect against fire and insulate against sound. With over 100 years’ experience in plaster, plasterboard and ceiling solutions, they already have a multitude of high-performance products and systems.

British Gypsum is the largest manufacturer of plasterboard used in the construction industry. With four main product families with size and ‘finish’ variants, and five UK manufacturing plants; each has its own warehouse attached.

British Gypsum enlisted the help of The Logistics and Supply Chain Consultants at Gideon Hillman Consulting UK, to determine what the logistics and distribution network should look like with their current customer base, without the constraints of Distribution centres at factory sites; curious to understand the limitations of specific constraints, namely the factory locations themselves and the product mix from each factory.

Following an initial meeting, the GH consultants visited two of the British Gypsum sites to gain an understanding of their operational processes, nature of the products and constraints around handling and vehicle loading.

The Gideon Hillman Consulting, Specialist Logistics and Warehouse Consultants team provided British Gypsum with a detailed qualitative evaluation of the network options, showing the pros and cons for each. Following this, the Consultants on the GH team, were able to determine the centre of gravity locations for a number of scenarios, based on minimisation of load miles to customer delivery locations.

Gideon Hillman Consulting UK, Logistics, Warehouse, and Supply Chain Consultancy worked closely with the British Gypsum team to evaluate their network distribution strategies, and establish the processes required to be implemented, to ensure an optimum future distribution network strategy.
