Simon Jersey - Customer Case Study

GH Consulting conduct Warehouse Design and Optimisation Strategy

Warehouse Design and Optimisation Strategy Simon Jersey was set up more than 45 years ago by Lancashire businessman Simon Moyle. After gaining international reputation for well-designed uniforms, they moved into a purpose-built headquarters in 1991. The company has since changed ownership, but their passion for creating stylish, practical uniforms remains the same, with Simon Jersey appointed as an official supplier to Team GB, for Rio 2016 Olympics.

Based in Accrington since 1971, and with more than 45 years’ experience in designing for diverse teams of all shapes and sizes, Simon Jersey is one of the UK’s leading corporate and work wear specialist companies, supplying uniforms to businesses and industries worldwide.

Simon Jersey supplies off the shelf and bespoke corporate
Warehouse & DC Designuniforms to sectors including leisure, hospitality, catering, healthcare, beauty and retail, to clients including McDonalds, Vue Cinemas, NHS, P&O Cruises, Avis, Sodexo and Hertz.

Offering a range of more than 800 garments available via their website and catalogue, and with a turnover of circa £25M, the business is a multichannel seller, servicing customers through an ecommerce website, catalogue sales, key account management teams, field sales and international distributors.

Recognising their current facility required a review of, and improvements, to their logistics operations, Simon Jersey requested the expertise and support of The Logistics and Supply Chain Consultants, Gideon Hillman Consulting (GH).

To enable Simon Jersey’s management team tomake fact based decisions regarding investment plans (equipment, systems and automation) into the new facility to best support the future growth strategy of the business; Simon Jersey required Gideon Hillman Consulting to  provide a proposal to review the current and proposed DC operations.

The scope of this project required The Logistics and Supply Chain Consultants to develop an optimised design and implementation plan for the new combined facility (existing and new building as one) in terms of layouts, Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), WMS requirements, MHE and racking requirements, shifts and resource patterns and to calculate the capacity of the new facility when running in an optimised state including consideration for appropriate automation.

Following an initial ‘kick-off’ meeting with the consultant team and key client stakeholders, the project approach, timetable, key milestones, and roles and responsibilities were agreed. The Specialist Consultants also required an overview of Simon Jersey’s business activities and future plans, including an initial 'high level' site tour to assist in the familiarisation process.

The Specialist Logistics and Supply Chain Consultants at Gideon Hillman Consulting assessed Simon Jersey’s key warehouse processes, and to identify how they conducted processes such as picking, marshalling, despatching and storage of inventory, alongside value added activities including personalisation and embroidering.

With the support of Gideon Hillman Consulting, Simon Jersey were able to successfully improve upon their current logistics operations, and implement an optimised strategy within their warehouse operations going forwards.
