Greene King engages the Specialists at Gideon Hillman Consulting

Greene King was founded in 1799 in Bury St. Edmunds, in Suffolk, and is now the country’s leading integrated pub retailer and brewer.

 

As at May 2015 it owned or operated popular national brands such as Hungry Horse, Old English Inns and Loch Fyne Seafood and Grill. It is also the UK’s leading cask ale brewer with brands including Greene King IPA and Old Speckled Hen.

 

In June 2015 Greene King acquired Spirit Pub Company plc, which added over 1,200 pubs to it’s estate including brands such as Flaming Grill, Taylor Walker and Chef & Brewer. The company now employs over 40,000 people across the UK, around half of which are under the age of 25.

 

Greene King is made up of three main businesses: Retail, Pub Partners and Brewing & Brands. The Retail business comprises the pubs, restaurants and hotels that it manages in England, Scotland and Wales. As at May 2015 there were over 1,000 sites in the estate, split between the Local Pubs Division and the Destination Pubs Division. The primary sales categories are food, drink and accommodation. Food, the fastest growing category in Retail, comprises around 42% of Retail sales. Greene King added a further 791 managed sites to it’s Retail division through the acquisition of Spirit Pub Company plc in June 2015.

 

The Pub Partners business offers people the opportunity to run Greene King pubs in England, Scotland and Wales on a tenanted, leased or franchised basis. As at May 2015 there were around 850 sites in the estate. In June 2015, Spirit Pub Company plc added a further 416 pubs to the Pub Partners estate.

 

Greene King Brewing & Brands operates two breweries, in Bury St Edmunds and in Dunbar. It is the leading brewer of cask ale in the UK with an iconic ale brand portfolio, including Greene King IPA, Old Speckled Hen, Abbot Ale and Scotland's leading ale brand, Belhaven Best. The launch of the St Edmund Brewhouse in 2013 has enhanced the portfolio of craft ales.
